USAID, in partnership with Transparency International, is hosting a virtual event on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to elevate the work and perspectives of anti-corruption change makers from around the world. Corruption imperils democracy; sabotages development progress and stymies economic growth; erodes resilience to health, climatic, and other shocks; and robs citizens of dignity and justice. Yet, the perpetrators and facilitators of these harms often go unpunished.

During this event, USAID Administrator Samantha Power will lead a dynamic conversation with a civil society activist, government reformer, and investigative journalist—all of whom will speak directly to what they have experienced on the frontlines of the global fight against corruption:

  • Juan Francisco Sandoval Alfaro, former Chief of the Special Prosecutors Office Against Impunity in Guatemala;
  • Achraf Aouadi, founder of I-Watch (a Tunisian watchdog organisation and chapter of Transparency International); and
  • Miranda Patrucic, Deputy Editor in Chief, Regional and Central Asia of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

Transparency International Vice Chair Rueben Lifuka will join Administrator Power for this roundtable, and the event will feature a discussion with the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya. Attendees will have an opportunity to pose questions to the panel following the discussion.
