Today, USAID announced the new Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability (SALT) at the Our Ocean Conference in St. Julian's, Malta. SALT brings together the seafood industry, governments, and non-governmental organizations to collaborate on innovative solutions for legal and sustainable seafood, with the goal of increased transparency in seafood supply chains and strengthened management of fisheries.

USAID is joined by the Walton Family Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and FishWise, a non-profit sustainable seafood consultancy, as partners on SALT.

Illegal fishing jeopardizes the well-being of 3.1 billion people who rely on fish for food, contributes to human trafficking, and disadvantages legal fishers and businesses in the United States and around the world. Through SALT, USAID reaffirms its commitments to building the capacity of countries to manage their fisheries sustainably and to partnering with the private sector to achieve common goals.
