Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Finland’s Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Ville Skinnari. They discussed the ongoing crisis in northern Ethiopia, humanitarian response priorities in Afghanistan, advancing the rights of women and girls through political participation as well as countering violence against women including in online forums. They also discussed sustainable forest management and climate change policy leading up to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26). The two discussed further bilateral cooperation on digital development through the use of emerging technologies and expanding digital infrastructure through private sector investments in developing countries. 

The meeting concluded with Administrator Power and Minister Skinnari signing a Statement of Intent (SOI) on Digital Empowerment. The SOI affirms the joint intent of USAID and Finland to strengthen the digital ecosystem in partner countries, in part by building the capacity of government institutions and public and private entities. In addition, the SOI seeks to provide technical assistance and support innovative solutions to facilitate an inclusive digital transformation.
