On October 14, USAID Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman met with Katarina Mathernova, Deputy Director-General, Directorate-General for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR) for the European Union (EU) to coordinate on the broader Ukraine development and humanitarian response, direct budget support for Ukraine, energy needs for Moldova, and other assistance in the region. Both leaders recognize that supporting a free and sovereign Ukraine requires a strong, sustained, multinational response. Deputy Director General Mathernova provided an update on recent EU funding for Ukraine and the EU plans for development, humanitarian assistance, and budgetary assistance for the year ahead.

Deputy Administrator Coleman expressed the USAID’s appreciation for the EU’s robust response to Russian Federation’s unjust war against Ukraine and outlined USAID’s approach to providing immediate assistance while balancing long-term recovery efforts in Ukraine.

DG NEAR and the Deputy Administrator also discussed support to Moldova, particularly on increasing assistance to bolster Moldova’s energy security this winter.
