Yesterday, Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman spoke with United Nations Special Envoy to Burma Noeleen Heyzer to discuss the humanitarian situation in the country, including efforts to secure humanitarian access to populations in need.

Deputy Administrator Coleman and Special Envoy Heyzer discussed UN efforts to facilitate and improve humanitarian access to conflict-affected and displaced people across Burma, particularly to affected communities in contested regions, while addressing protection concerns that disproportionately affect women and children. They also discussed the need for swift implementation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Five-Point Consensus, the immediate cessation of violence and constructive dialogue by all parties to resolve the conflict peacefully. Additionally, Deputy Administrator Coleman and Special Envoy Heyzer spoke about USAID’s continued coordination of bilateral development assistance to civil society organizations and the private sector in the agriculture and health sectors, among others, in conflict-affected areas of Burma.
