Press Release

On Thursday, April 15, 2021, the United States will co-host with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the launch of the Investment Opportunity for the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment. The virtual convening will call on partners to join the United States and others in providing resources and commitments to accelerate global COVID-19 vaccinations and end the pandemic.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, USAID Acting Administrator Gloria Steele, and Gavi Board Chair José Manuel Barroso will deliver remarks and convene world leaders, the private sector, civil society, and technical experts to advance equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines.

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has demonstrated that no nation can act alone against a global pandemic. Equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines is critical to reduce the tragic loss of life, end the pandemic, recover the U.S. and global economy, and keep Americans safe.

The United States, through USAID, is accelerating global access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines through a historic $2 billion contribution to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. This contribution supports the purchase and delivery of COVID-19 vaccines for 92 low-and middle-income countries, through the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment. This will ensure safe and effective vaccines reach the world’s most vulnerable and at-risk populations, including frontline health care workers, while helping to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and emerging variants.

As the world’s premier development agency and largest funder of global health, USAID supports communities to combat infectious diseases such as Ebola, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and now COVID-19.
