Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with New Zealand’s Ambassador to the United States, Mr. Bede Corry. Administrator Power shared her deep concerns for families recovering from the severe impacts of Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle and other flooding in recent weeks. She commended New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency and first responders for their initial swift disaster response, and noted the partnership formed upon the arrival of the USAID disaster experts who deployed to provide technical expertise and support the Government of New Zealand-led response to reach communities hit hardest during these unprecedented flooding and landslide events.

Administrator Power and Ambassador Corry also discussed other priorities for collaboration in the Pacific, including support to the Pacific Islands Forum and the region in the areas of access to climate finance, resilient infrastructure, digital connectivity, renewable energy, protecting coastal fisheries, democracy support, and inclusive economic empowerment to include women. Administrator Power shared further details on USAID’s plans to expand our presence in the Pacific to broaden programs for sustainable impact in the region and a desire to work in partnership with New Zealand.
