Press Release

The below is attributable to Spokesperson Rebecca Chalif:‎

Today, Administrator Power spoke with International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Secretary General Jagan Chapagain to discuss the current state of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and neighboring countries following Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified war on Ukraine.

Administrator Power and Secretary General Chapagain discussed the deteriorating conditions, which have forced more than one million people to flee Ukraine in the past week. Administrator Power and Secretary General Chapagain discussed their experiences visiting the Ukraine-Poland border, and Secretary General Chapagain shared that while operations are constrained, the Ukrainian Red Cross is still operating, including in Kyiv. Administrator Power also provided an update on U.S. support for the response in Ukraine, including the deployment of a Disaster Assistance Response Team, the initial announcement of nearly $54 million in U.S. humanitarian assistance for Ukraine, and the supplemental request for additional assistance. USAID provides critical assistance to IFRC for hygiene supplies and support for its logistics efforts in getting resources to people who need it most.

Administrator Power thanked Secretary General Chapagain for IFRC’s support of the brave and tireless work the Ukrainian Red Cross have been undertaking to respond to the crisis, and for continuing to provide desperately needed assistance despite the complex operational environment and safety and security challenges.
