The below is attributable to Acting Spokesperson Shejal Pulivarti:

Today, Administrator Power participated in the World Bank Group’s (WBG) “The Way Forward” series, in which WBG President David Malpass invites prominent government or development actors to discuss bold ideas and policies to address global challenges.

The Administrator and President Malpass discussed shared concerns around the long-term impacts of Russia’s war against Ukraine and threats to development gains, particularly on global food security and nutrition. The Administrator provided updates on USAID efforts to address this complex crisis, including by surging emergency food assistance to those most in need. She also spoke about how through Feed the Future, the U.S. government’s global hunger and food security initiative, the Agency is working with partner countries to mitigate fertilizer shortages, increase agricultural capacity and resilience, and strengthen social safety nets to protect the most vulnerable from these shocks.

Administrator Power noted the critical role international financial institutions (IFIs) play in addressing food insecurity, and spoke about the need for the World Bank and other IFIs to continue ramping up assistance. She also recognized the complementary roles of bilateral donors and multilateral organizations in responding to the multiple global crises the world is currently facing, and the two discussed how the World Bank and other IFIs should continue to coordinate closely with USAID to maximize donor dollars and ensure aid gets to those who need it most as efficiently and effectively as possible.
