On July 20, 2021, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power met with Republic of Korea Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jong-moon and discussed building on the long standing partnership and history of cooperation between USAID and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). USAID closed its Mission in Seoul back in 1980, and the Republic of Korea has become an important example of a country that was once a foreign aid recipient and is now a growing donor of development assistance and a close partner with USAID on development projects in the Indo-Pacific and around the world.
Administrator Power and Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jong-moon discussed shared development cooperation priorities, including accelerating the COVID-19 response and recovery and increasing global vaccine supply, as well as the need to remain focused on other global health programs and infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. They also discussed opportunities to advance climate resilience in the Indo-Pacific, address humanitarian and development needs in the Northern Triangle, and support the democratic transition in Sudan.
