Administrator Samantha Power and Senior LGBTQI+ Coordinator Jay Gilliam met today with representatives from the Council for Global Equality (CGE) to discuss USAID’s commitment to supporting the rights and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) persons. The CGE representatives offered perspectives from partners around the world and discussed opportunities to work with USAID and support the advancement of USAID’s LGBTQI+ portfolio.

During the meeting, Administrator Power highlighted USAID’s efforts to promote investments in LGBTQI+-inclusive development, including through a new fund that provides financial support to incentivize USAID’s overseas Missions to engage local LGBTQI+ groups, and the Alliance for Global Equality, a new five-year public-private-partnership that will help build the resilience of LGBTQI+-led organizations around the world to advance human rights and social inclusion. Administrator Power also highlighted internal Agency efforts such as the forthcoming update to the Agency’s LGBTQI+ Policy, and revamped training courses focused on best practices for LGBTQI+-inclusive development and nondiscrimination in program design and implementation.
