The following is attributable to USAID Deputy Spokesperson Shejal Pulivarti:

During a two-day visit to Haiti, USAID Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman met with Haitian government officials, as well as local partners and USAID staff, to discuss compounding crises in the country. During her visit, the Deputy Administrator highlighted how USAID is helping to alleviate humanitarian needs, combat cholera, and advance democracy and economic stability in Haiti, including through the U.S. Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability. At a media briefing with Haitian and international press, she announced an additional $56.5 million in humanitarian assistance to address urgent needs caused by the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis and cholera epidemic.

The Deputy Administrator also met with the International Organization of Migration, a USAID partner, to discuss its work to support repatriated Haitian migrants, capacity building efforts to receive additional migrants, and the expansion of safe and dignified legal pathways for migration.

During her second day in Haiti, the Deputy Administrator met with USAID’s Haitian staff. They discussed the challenges staff face and the risks associated with their work in Haiti. The Deputy Administrator expressed her deepest appreciation for the work, contributions, and sacrifices of USAID’s Haitian staff.

Finally, the Deputy Administrator visited a USAID-supported Cholera Treatment Unit, where she saw firsthand how U.S. support has bolstered the cholera response in Haiti; learned about the process for patients seeking cholera treatment; and heard directly from staff about the challenges they face, how the epidemic has evolved, and the future of the response.
