Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration Oleksandr Kubrakov and Minister of Energy German Galushenko. They discussed opportunities to further strengthen Ukraine’s energy system, as Putin continues to target Ukraine’s power grid and critical infrastructure in an effort to weaponize winter. The meeting also included senior officials from the Ministry of Restoration and Ministry of Energy.

During the meeting, they discussed the Ukrainian government’s priorities for strengthening and decentralizing the energy system and opportunities to align assistance from the international community. Administrator Power outlined efforts to balance urgent assistance needed to keep the power on throughout the war, with longer term investments to prepare for the modernization and reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy system in the future. The Administrator noted the quick action USAID has taken to procure emergency equipment to support the continuity of electricity, heat, and gas services across the country and reaffirmed that mitigating the harm being caused by Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure remains among the U.S. government’s top priorities.
