USAID's Disaster Assistance Response Team arrived in Leyte province to survey regions hardest hit by Super Typhoon Haiyan

On Friday, Super Typhoon Haiyan swept across the Philippines with the strength of one of the most powerful storms ever to hit land.  In response to the storm, the United States Government announced today $20 million in humanitarian assistance, including emergency food aid and critical relief supplies--like shelter materials and hygiene kits--for disaster-affected areas.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with Ashden, a United Kingdom-based energy charity, announced a new award for innovators who use or supply clean energy technologies to increase production in the agricultural sector. The contest is open for entries until November 5, 2013. The winner will receive an award of up to £40,000 (approximately $64,000) at a ceremony in London on May 22, 2014.

U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Maria Brewer said today that "the United States Government is proud to have contributed to this historic handover of power companies to the private sector and congratulates the Government of Nigeria (GON) on achieving a very important milestone in the liberalization of the power sector."  The comments were made in response to the Presidential handover of the Licenses and Share Certificates to the new owners of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) successor generation and distribution companies.

1000MW Facility will be Largest Geothermal Plant in Africa

Prime Minister H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn and Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Michael Debretsion were both in attendance today to announce the first independent power project in Ethiopia’s history.  The 1000MW Corbetti geothermal plant will be built in two 500MW stages and is expected to be the largest geothermal facility in of Africa, at a cost estimated at $4 billion over an 8-10 year construction period.

USAID/Haiti launched a four-year food security program today to improve nutrition and access to locally produced foods for the most vulnerable households in Haiti. The project, the Kore Lavi Program, is part of the U.S. Government’s global hunger and food security initiatives Feed the Future and Title II. These programs work with USAID’s partner countries around the world to develop their agriculture sectors and reduce food insecurity. It will be implemented by CARE International.

Dozens of people died yesterday at the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi in a terrorist attack that was shocking in its brutality and brazenness.  Among those killed was a member of our own extended family: Ruhila Adatia-Sood, wife of Ketan Sood, a Foreign Service National at our Mission in Nairobi. Ruhila was several months pregnant with their child.
