Press Release

The following is attributable to Spokesperson Rebecca Chalif:

Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Eduardo Enrique Reina, Honduran Minister of Foreign Affairs, to convey USAID’s commitment to partnering with the people of Honduras to advance development and democracy.

Administrator Power underscored U.S. support for efforts to tackle corruption and impunity, including President Castro’s request for a UN-backed anti-corruption body. Administrator Power discussed the importance of imbuing justice institutions, including a potential UN body, with the requisite autonomy and independence to guarantee accountability and equality before the law. She also highlighted USAID’s successful efforts to build the capacity of the country’s Labor Ministry to provide efficient and transparent pathways for Honduran workers to connect with employers in the United States under the H-2A and H-2B seasonal work visa programs. Administrator Power and Foreign Minister Reina discussed USAID’s ongoing programs to support education, job creation, and COVID-19 vaccination and recovery in Honduras.

These efforts are part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s robust, long-term strategy to partner with reformers, civil society, and the private sector to address the root causes of irregular migration and provide hope and opportunity for the people of Honduras.
