Today, on the final day of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, Administrator Samantha Power held bilateral meetings with African leaders and joined President Joe Biden and African Heads of State at the Promoting Food Security and Food Systems Resilience session.

In the morning, Administrator Power met with President Felix Tshisekedi and discussed the fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as well as the need for peace and stability. Administrator Power expressed deep concern for the impact of the violence on Congolese civilians, reinforced the importance of independent investigations of atrocities, and urged further collaboration with humanitarian actors to provide services to those in need. They also agreed to ongoing collaboration and a shared commitment to creating a conducive environment for free and fair elections in 2023.

In the afternoon, Administrator Power met with Kenyan President William Ruto to reinforce the growing U.S.-Kenyan strategic partnership. They discussed the unprecedented drought in Kenya and the Horn of Africa, where the U.S. remains the largest donor of assistance, and committed to expanding partnerships to address long-term resilience and climate adaptation. Administrator Power underscored the opportunity for Kenya to be a global leader in digital transformation, and reinforced USAID’s commitment to partnering with Kenya to build a thriving tech sector.

Administrator Power closed out the day's events by participating in U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit Closing Session on Promoting Food Security and Food Systems Resilience, during which President Biden announced an additional $2 billion in urgently needed humanitarian assistance, provided through USAID, which will help the people of African nations impacted by disasters and ongoing protracted humanitarian crises.
