Today, USAID Deputy Administrator for Policy and Programming Isobel Coleman met with United Nations World Food Program (WFP) Executive Director David Beasley. They discussed the urgent humanitarian crises around the world, including in Ethiopia and Afghanistan.

Deputy Administrator Coleman expressed sincere appreciation for WFP’s sustained efforts in Ethiopia to secure humanitarian access while maintaining operational readiness to assist people in need. They shared concern over the difficulty in securing safe passage of humanitarian flights in Ethiopia, the recent blockage of a humanitarian convoy, and the pause of food distributions due to food insecurity, the latest in a series of impediments to the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Deputy Administrator Coleman and Executive Director Beasley also discussed WFP’s efforts to address food insecurity in Afghanistan, particularly during the challenging winter season, and commitment to advocating for the full participation of women and girls in delivering and receiving humanitarian assistance.

Deputy Administrator Coleman and Executive Director Beasley reaffirmed the continued partnership between USAID and WFP to provide humanitarian aid to those most in need around the world.
