The following is attributable to USAID Spokesperson Rebecca Chalif:

On August 4, 2021, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Counselor Chris Milligan met with Republic of Palau President Surangel Whipps, Jr. during his first presidential visit to the United States. They discussed Palau’s impressive vaccination efforts among their adult population, the importance of collaboration to address infrastructure priorities in the Pacific, such as the undersea cable spur to Palau, and achieving shared climate change objectives, including addressing marine debris and unsustainable and illegal fishing. In response to climate challenges, Palau serves as a role model for the rest of the world in its environmental stewardship, and the U.S. is a leader in facilitating resilience and disaster preparedness.

Counselor Milligan recognized the challenges small island economies are facing due to COVID-19 and the increased frequency of natural disasters, and commended Palau’s vision for hosting the upcoming “Our Ocean” Conference in 2022. President Whipps, Jr. and Counselor Milligan addressed opportunities to leverage the two countries’collective strengths alongside those of the partners in the region.
