On August 10, 2021, Administrator Samantha Power met with Canadian Minister of International Development Karina Gould. They discussed ongoing efforts to end the COVID-19 pandemic through support to COVAX to ensure it is meeting countries’ vaccine needs. They also discussed support for vaccine readiness and health systems preparedness.

Administrator Power and Minister Gould spoke about protecting sexual and reproductive health and rights, supporting women’s and children’s health and building the care economy, and agreed to explore opportunities to better coordinate efforts through bilateral and multilateral assistance. They also discussed their shared priorities on global polio eradication and tuberculosis targets.

Administrator Power shared insights from her recent travel to Sudan, Ethiopia, and Central America. She and Minister Gould agreed to coordinate action to support the civilian-led transitional government in Sudan, alleviate suffering in northern Ethiopia, and address the acute humanitarian needs and root causes of irregular migration from Central America, including by supporting the creation of employment opportunities. They also exchanged views on future development assistance needs in Afghanistan and agreed to pursue a common agenda with other donors.
