On April 19, Administrator Samantha Power was joined by President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu, United States Ambassador to Moldova Kent Logsdon, and USAID/Moldova Mission Director Scott Hocklander to meet with members of the Moldovan American community.

Administrator Power shared impressions from her recent trip to Moldova and conveyed the United States’ partnership with the people and government of Moldova, both during this time of crisis and for the country’s long term development. She thanked the Moldovan American community for their remarkable support for the people of Moldova as they have mobilized to help the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees fleeing into the country as a result of Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Administrator emphasized the crucial role of the diaspora in supporting Moldova’s long-term development and reform agenda, as well as USAID’s commitment to deepening links with the community as part of our broader effort to mobilize support for the Moldovan people. 

President Sandu spoke to the current challenges facing Moldova, and emphasized her commitment to building on Moldova’s forward looking reform agenda by continuing to fight corruption, build government capacity and expand economic opportunity for Moldovans. The President thanked the Moldovan diaspora community for their grassroots efforts to support the country and encouraged them to stay involved in Moldova’s ongoing transformation. She also expressed gratitude to the people and government of the US for their partnership with Moldova.   

Administrator Power thanked Moldovan President Sandu for her tremendous leadership during this time of crisis and reaffirmed US support for Moldova’s reform agenda and the government’s plans to further strengthen its democracy, combat corruption, and deliver meaningful progress to its people. She also thanked U.S. Ambassador Logsdon and Mission Director Hocklander for their service during this crucial time and for their commitment to advancing the U.S.-Moldova partnership.

On April 5-7, Administrator Power travels to the Slovak Republic and Moldova to see firsthand the impact the Russian Federation’s brutal war in Ukraine is having on civilians forced to flee, and to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to support nations on the frontlines of the humanitarian response.
