Today, Administrator Samantha Power attended meetings and events during her third day at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, New York.

At the “Responding to Urgent Humanitarian Needs in the Horn of Africa” event co-hosted by the Governments of Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Qatar, in cooperation with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) and the Governments of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, Administrator Power announced more than $151 million in new U.S. assistance to respond to the food crisis in Somalia. This assistance will support families facing the most immediate risk of famine, including individuals who have been forced to flee their homes due to the unprecedented drought in the Horn of Africa. Administrator Power also met with UNOCHA Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths to discuss ongoing humanitarian responses around the world.

In a meeting with Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, Administrator Power discussed USAID’s intent to work with the Armenian government to find new ways to help build on the democratic gains achieved to date. Administrator Power expressed condolences for the lives lost during recent fighting with Azerbaijan, and underscored U.S. support for diplomacy and direct engagement to prevent further hostilities. Administrator Power and Foreign Minister Mirzoyan discussed the importance of enhancing USAID’s partnership with Armenia to promote democracy, prosperity, and lasting peace for the Armenian people.

The Administrator also met with Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia. She expressed USAID’s eagerness to work with Zambia as a new Feed the Future target country. Administrator Power discussed how the U.S. government will take a more coordinated approach over the next five years to its long-term food security investments in the country and in turn pave the way for further resources and investment from the private sector, donors, and local governments.

Finally, Administrator Power announced an additional $280 million in pledges to address child malnutrition while participating in an event on “Accelerating Progress on Acute Malnutrition: A Call to Action,” co-hosted by USAID, UNICEF, the Government of Senegal, and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation. These pledges from donors around the globe built on the $200 million USAID committed in July, and USAID’s subsequent efforts to urgently mobilize additional support. Administrator Power highlighted the U.S. government’s leadership in addressing child malnutrition and continued to call for additional resources, support, and attention to this urgent issue.
