Press Release

The below is attributable to Spokesperson Rebecca Chalif:

Today, Administrator Samantha Power spoke with Janez Lenarčič, European Union Commissioner for Crisis Management, to discuss the expected increase in humanitarian needs following Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified further invasion of Ukraine.

Administrator Power and Commissioner Lenarčič discussed the rapidly changing situation on the ground in Ukraine, as many people have begun to flee their homes in search of safety. They also spoke about the likelihood that the current crisis would trigger significant need and displacement of Ukrainians within Ukraine and to neighboring countries. Administrator Power highlighted USAID’s deployment of a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to the region to lead the U.S. humanitarian response to the crisis in Ukraine. She also emphasized the importance of the United States and the EU continuing to work together with the Government of Ukraine to meet the immediate needs of the Ukrainian people.
