Administrator Samantha Power Travels to Haiti

USAID Newsletter

USAID continues to help Haiti recover from August’s 7.2 magnitude earthquake. Administrator Samantha Power saw the devastation firsthand last week, traveling to Port-au-Prince and the hard-hit commune of Maniche to survey damage and meet with Haitian officials, USAID’s Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART), and members of the U.S. Department of Defense who are supporting the U.S. response. More than 2,200 people lost their lives, at least 12,000 people were injured, and many thousands of homes, businesses, and churches were destroyed. USAID’s DART, including an Urban Search and Rescue Team from Fairfax County, Va., and our U.S. military partners immediately responded to hard-hit areas. USAID will continue to coordinate with our partners and the Government of Haiti to scale up efforts and bring relief to Haiti.

NEWS & EVENTS

Busy Month! The Administrator traveled to East Africa, visiting Sudan to recognize the country’s democratic progress and Ethiopia to call attention to the dire need for aid access in the Tigray region. We announced aid for Yemen, Lebanon, Burma, and Thailand. More COVID-19 vaccines landed in partner countries, including Vietnam during the Vice President’s visit. And the Agency paid tribute to one of our own on World Humanitarian Day.
