The Government of Nigeria (GoN) Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD), in partnership with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UN World Food Program (WFP), and other relief agencies, recently released an updated Cadre Harmonisé report—a multi-sector food security and nutrition analysis—for 16 Nigerian states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) program recently announced eighteen new grantees. The grantee organizations -- the majority of which are new to USAID -- span seven sectors and nine different countries, from Brazil to Zambia.

Ukraine’s economic crisis exposed legal, regulatory and institutional weaknesses. Ukraine needs dramatic and decisive reforms to stabilize and revitalize its economy. The three most urgent interventions include: improving the business enabling environment for SME’s, implementing a fair and transparent commercial law framework, and diversifying Ukraine’s export markets.

UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) Mark Lowcock traveled to Yemen from October 23–27 to meet with Republic of Yemen Government (RoYG) officials in the city of Aden and Al Houthi officials in the capital city of Sana’a. ERC Lowcock encouraged greater coordination of humanitarian activities and urged parties to the conflict to ameliorate Yemen’s challenging operational environment, particularly bureaucratic impediments and disruptions to humanitarian operations.

USAID assists disadvantaged groups, such as vulnerable children, people with disabilities (PWD), people at risk of trafficking and trafficking victims, through the development of community based services, strengthening the capacities of organizations providing support to these populations, and enhancing advocacy efforts to promote their rights and increase public awareness.

The private sector share of the Belarus GDP is among the lowest in the region, with micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) making up most of it. Low MSME participation in the national economy hampers job creation and development of modern products and services and slows the transfer of technology demanded by a competitive market economy. While there is an increasing appreciation by the Government of Belarus for the private sector’s role in the economy, the business environment still needs improvement.

USAID civil society development activities foster informed civic participation in community-based initiatives and public advocacy across the social and economic spectrum in Belarus. USAID empowers citizens to participate in social and economic decision-making by encouraging cooperation between civil society, local governments, and the private sector, helping to create sustainable solutions to local development challenges. USAID provides training, expert advice, and small grants to support civil society organizations (CSOs) and communities, independent business associations and legal assistance providers. Exchange programs introduce Belarusians to best American professional practices and offer opportunities to experience American culture, traditions and values.

Armed actors continue to target civilian populations across the Lake Chad Basin region. Three late October attacks near Borno’s capital city of Maiduguri resulted in at least 13 civilian deaths and nearly 20 injuries, according to international media. In addition, the UN reports that a mid-September attack in Cameroon’s Far North Region displaced nearly 1,700 people within Mayo-Tsanaga Department.

On October 20, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced the recapture of Ar Raqqah Governorate’s city of Ar Raqqah from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS); ISIS had taken control of the city in January 2014. SDF-led military operations to retake Ar Raqqah began on June 6 and culminated in intense fighting in the city’s centermost neighborhoods during the final weeks of the offensive, according to international media. As military operations concluded, SDF escorted the majority of civilians remaining in the city to nearby security screening sites, media reports.

The United States has had a diplomatic relationship with ASEAN since 1977, cooperating in trade, economic and social development, people-to-people connections, institutional strengthening, national security, defense, science and technology and education.
