USAID Physical Rehabilitation Activity

2019- 2025 | Handicap International | $5.5 Million Funding

OVERVIEW

USAID Physical Rehabilitation Activity utilizes a health systems strengthening approach to establish an integrated rehabilitation services system. This improves access to quality services through strong public private partnerships.  This activity improves the mobility and functional independence of persons with disabilities.

HIGHLIGHT

USAID Physical Rehabilitation Activity, in partnership with the Government of Nepal, supports 5 private physical rehabilitation centers and 19 public sector physiotherapy units.  The activity also fosters their collaboration, improving access to quality rehabilitation services across the country.

USAID Partners with Federal, Provincial and Local Governments:

USAID is supporting the Government of Nepal at every level–federal, provincial and local–to respond to the health challenges and needs of persons with disabilities.  This includes implementing rehabilitation policies, integrating physical rehabilitation services into ongoing health programs, and promoting local government’s ownership of USAID’s assistance.  This partnership has realized the development, integration, and roll-out of a disability-specific module within the national health information and management system.

USAID Leverages Public Private Partnerships of Physical Rehabilitation Services:

USAID supported integrating 5 of Nepal’s 7 private physical rehabilitation centers into the government’s system, allowing them to receive government funding.  Under this public private partnership model, 48,000 people have received rehabilitation services through government physiotherapy units and private physical rehabilitation centers supported by USAID.

USAID Strengthens the Resilience of Persons with Disabilities:

USAID helped improve the mobility and functional independence of 75% of women, men, boys and girls who have received rehabilitation services provided through the public health system.
