MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery

2021 - 2025 | Population Services International | $18 Million Funding

OVERVIEW

USAID’s MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery implements a private sector family planning approach to deliver quality services to adolescents and youth.  The activity builds the technical capacity of local private sector providers in an equitable, profitable, and sustainable manner.

HIGHLIGHT

USAID’s MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery enhances provider business skills and complements them with business practices such as feedback mechanisms, quality assurance, and demand generation.  It also develops adolescent counseling skills and equitable family planning services that are scalable and sustainable.

USAID Leverages the Private Sector to Deliver Family Planning Services:

USAID developed a business model with the private sector to provide quality family planning services to adolescents and other youth in Nepal. This was done by guiding private clinics and pharmacies to ensure quality, equitable, and profitable family planning service delivery.

USAID Promotes Locally Led Development:

USAID is pursuing a locally led approach to developing family planning services delivered by private sector providers.  By using a human-centered design approach for client-responsive services, local providers are more engaged and leverage their on-the-ground experience to deliver relevant and feasible solutions.

USAID Bolsters Local Government’s Health Facilities:

USAID is expanding family planning interventions in 60 municipalities in Bagmati, Lumbini, Karnali, Gandaki and Madesh provinces.  The activity partners with almost 900 private facilities including pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals to improve core approaches.  For example, one approach focuses on the client side by developing service providers’ family planning counseling and interpersonal people skills when seeing clients.  Another approach centers on running businesses more efficiently by training private sector facility owners and providers on implementing a business approach with value clarifications. These two approaches have yielded better outcomes for clients seeking family planning while still increasing profits for facility owners and service providers.
