Today, Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya announced the United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing $116 million in additional assistance to respond to needs, including severe food insecurity, in Mozambique.  This funding is in addition to the more than $592 million in humanitarian assistance announced last week in Kampala to support refugees and conflict-affected people across the African continent and the nearly $1.2 billion to provide critical aid for millions of people across the Horn of Africa announced July 18th.

The Administrator congratulated the Prime Minister on Moldova’s successful application for European Union candidate status. She noted that despite the increasing stress placed on Moldova by Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, both the government and people of Moldova have demonstrated tremendous resilience and commitment to further the reforms vital to building a democratic, European future for the country. She also reaffirmed that USAID remains committed to supporting the Moldovan government’s anti-corruption, development, and reform priorities, including expanding access to global markets for Moldovan businesses and generating new economic opportunities for young Moldovans.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has established a $100 million Agriculture Resilience Initiative (AGRI) - Ukraine to bolster Ukrainian agriculture exports and to help alleviate the global food security crisis exacerbated by Putin’s brutal war on Ukraine.

Today, Administrator Samantha Power delivered an address on the growing global food security crisis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies headquarters, co-hosted by the Eleanor Crook Foundation. The Administrator laid out the severity of the current food crisis, particularly in the Horn of Africa, outlined steps the United States is taking to address global hunger and malnutrition, and emphasized the urgent need for additional action to prevent the crisis from getting much worse.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing more than $169 million in additional humanitarian assistance to support people affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine, which has pushed nearly 12 million people from their homes. This funding is in addition to USAID’s ongoing activities supporting the Ukrainian people. USAID’s Disaster Assistance Response Team has been working since day one of Russia’s unprovoked war to ramp up relief alongside partners to meet the needs of the most vulnerable populations, including people who have been forced to flee their homes.

An unprecedented drought in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia—part of a region known as the Horn of Africa—is pushing millions of people to the brink of starvation. More than 18 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, primarily as a result of the drought. In response, Administrator Samantha Power announced today that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing nearly $1.3 billion in additional critical humanitarian and development assistance to help stave off mass starvation and deaths.
