The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in coordination with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, is providing an additional $4.5 billion in direct budgetary support to the Government of Ukraine to help alleviate the acute budget deficit caused by Putin’s brutal war of aggression. The Government of Ukraine will receive the funding in tranches, beginning with a $3 billion disbursement in August. This contribution was made possible with generous bipartisan support from Congress.

Today, USAID Administrator Samantha Power spent her second day in Colombia leading the Presidential Delegation to attend the Inauguration of His Excellency Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego. Administrator Power met with environmental defenders, who shared their experiences working to protect biodiversity and spur action to address climate change, advance peace, and enhance rural development.

Administrator Power began her trip by hosting a roundtable discussion with human rights defenders to hear directly about their experiences, work to support conflict victims, and efforts to advance implementation of the 2016 Peace Accord.

Recently, the Partnership for Public Service announced Joshua (Josh) Josa as the winner of the 2022 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal People's Choice Award. Josh serves as the Disability Inclusive Education Specialist in the Center for Education at USAID. This award honors Josh’s dedication and commitment to opening access to quality and equitable education for all children and youth, and we are proud to congratulate him on this achievement and the work he continues to do to advocate for children around the world.

The U.S. says 40 million people have become hungry since Russia invaded Ukraine. The war is combined with COVID, rising food prices, and the worst drought in a hundred years in East Africa. A Senegalese minister recently warned more people could die from the food crisis than die from COVID. Among the most acutely affected: Afghanistan where 20 million people, more than half of the country, are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity; Yemen where 19 million are food insecure, and the Horn of Africa where the UN says there is 37 million people suffer from acute hunger.

During the meeting, Administrator Power and Minister Búcaro discussed USAID’s longstanding commitment to the people of Guatemala and the importance of maintaining and deepening that partnership. Administrator Power highlighted USAID’s continuous efforts to combat food insecurity.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $431 million in additional humanitarian assistance for the people of Yemen. This brings the total amount that the U.S. government has provided to the Yemen humanitarian response to more than $1 billion in FY 2022.

Today, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced a new USAID-led Feed the Future project called “Harvest III” during a critical time when a food insecurity crisis threatens Southeast Asia. The project will support Cambodia’s economic growth and food security through private sector engagement by creating better jobs, diversifying diets, and improving the well-being of Cambodians, especially women, youth, and marginalized populations.

The Administrator and the President spoke about the importance of democratic governance and press freedom in Timor-Leste. They also discussed regional security and the importance of standing up for human rights across Southeast Asia.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $106 million in additional humanitarian assistance through the UN World Food Program (WFP) for the people of South Sudan, who continue to experience the devastating effects of violence, food insecurity, the COVID-19 pandemic, and successive years of widespread flooding–all of which are compounded by impacts resulting from Russia’s unprovoked war against Ukraine.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the Supporting, Mobilizing, and Accelerating Research for Tuberculosis Elimination (SMART4TB) project. SMART4TB, a five-year initiative, will invest up to $200 million, subject to availability of funding, to identify more effective methods and tools for finding, treating, and preventing tuberculosis (TB) in USAID’s 24 priority countries for TB programming.
