Chad
Over half of Chad's population live in poverty and have experienced decades of conflict and instability. However, since the 2010 peace agreement with neighboring Sudan, the country has enjoyed relative stability. Beginning in 2000, foreign direct investment in the oil sector has boosted revenues from oil production.
China
USAID’s activities relating to China fall into three categories and are implemented by the Agency’s Thailand-based Regional Development Mission for Asia (RDMA).
First, USAID assists Tibetan communities in China by promoting more prosperous lives through employment creation; improved management of natural resource-based livelihoods, such as yak herding; and preservation of their cultural heritage.
Colombia
Colombia is a middle-income country and one of the oldest democracies in Latin America. However, it has endured nearly half a century of intense armed conflict, perpetuated by widespread illegal drug production and trafficking.
Cyprus
USAID supports cooperation between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities to reduce tensions and promote a climate that will foster reconciliation and a durable peace settlement on the long divided island.
Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, the largest country in Francophone Africa, has vast natural resources. It has the potential to become one of the richest countries on the African continent and a driver of African growth if it can overcome its political instability. The persistent presence of armed groups, and ongoing insecurity continues to destabilize eastern DRC.
Djibouti
Djibouti's location in a conflict-prone region—with Yemen, Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia at its borders—combined with its commitment to peaceful, moderate views makes it a unique and strategic partner for the United States. Djibouti is home to one of the few warehouses, not based in the United States, that prepositions American food aid for Africa and Asia, thus reducing the delivery times to areas in need by 75 percent.
Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is the Caribbean’s largest economy, with an estimated 2014 gross domestic product (GDP) of $64.14 billion. Despite being a middle income country, more than 40 percent of Dominicans live in poverty, with the wealthiest 10 percent of the population accounting for more than 40 percent of the country’s income.
Eastern and Southern Caribbean
For almost 40 years, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided development assistance to the Caribbean region and sought to advance: “Safer more prosperous Caribbean Communities.” Despite significant strides made over the years, Eastern and Southern Caribbean countries remain vulnerable to myriad threats that impact the lives and livelihoods of citizens and vulnerable populations.
El Salvador
USAID’s assistance program to El Salvador recognizes that the security and economic growth of the Central American region impact the U.S. In alignment with the U.S. Strategy for Engagement in Central America goals of prosperity, security and good governance, USAID programs support the Alliance for Prosperity and El Salvador’s security plan.
Ethiopia
Our portfolio in Ethiopia is one of the largest and most complex in Africa.
Over the last decade, Ethiopia has made tremendous development gains in education, health and food security. In 2015, GDP growth was 9.6 percent (World Bank). The addition of 38,000 health extension workers has helped reduce the under-five child mortality rate by more than six percent a year since 2000.
Ghana
Ghana is a stable, democratic country with a free press, active civil society, independent judiciary and apolitical military. USAID and the Ghanaian Government work together to generate prosperity and security for both the Ghanaian and the American people by increasing agricultural production, employment opportunities, and income for the poor, improving the quality of health services and education, and strengthening local government institutions.
Guatemala
High levels of violence and insecurity, and historic inequality in Guatemala contribute to increased crime rates, high levels of poverty, and some of the lowest social development indicators in Latin America. Guatemala also is extremely vulnerable to natural disasters and the impacts of climate change. However, Guatemala also has a wealth of human and natural resources that can contribute to economic growth and increased stability.
Guinea
The West African nation of Guinea is predominantly a Muslim country, home to a population of approximately 12 million people, with natural beautiful landscapes on the ocean, close to the mountains, and in the shade of the forests. The country has the largest reserves of bauxite in the world, and is the second largest producer of the mineral. The agricultural sector provides a subsistence livelihood for nearly 80 percent of the population.
Guyana
USAID's programs in Guyana are managed out of USAID's Eastern and Southern Caribbean Mission.
In Guyana, USAID programs focus on health, economic growth, and democracy and governance.
The health program strengthens public health systems and works to ensure the availability of comprehensive care; enhances civil-society and private-sector responses to HIV/AIDS; provides HIV prevention services; and improves supply-chain management of drugs and other supplies.
Haiti
The U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) works to build a stable and economically viable Haiti. While challenges remain, key advancements in health services, investments in the agriculture sector, municipal governance and legal protections for vulnerable populations as well as investments in infrastructure amount to real improvements. U.S. assistance focuses on long-term reconstruction and development, promoting economic growth, job creation and agricultural development, providing basic health care and education services, and improving the effectiveness of government.
