USAID/Mexico is delighted to announce the start of a new award entitled “Awareness and Opportunities for Women in Prison,” implemented by the Mexican NGO “La Cana.”  The activity’s objective is to promote the rehabilitation and reintegration of young female detainees and reduce their likelihood of future violent and criminal behavior.  This will be achieved by providing targeted job related skills-training and wellness treatment to female youth in detention centers to increase their professional and social capabilities and transition into their communities after detention.  Moreover, the activity will focus on improving the working conditions of female inmates and promote the increased presence of ethical businesses within the prisons by analyzing private sector access to female prisons; promoting cost-effective holistic models; and advocating for reforms by local penitentiary authorities to incentivize companies to invest in cost effective prevention models that will reduce recidivism in the mid- and long term.  This will be achieved in six prisons located in the State of Mexico and Mexico City.  The aim is to promote social reintegration of former detainees, reduce the risk of recidivism, and break the cycle of violence.
