Bamako, Mali - The United States Embassy in Mali and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are pleased to announce today’s arrival of USAID Mali Mission Director Miriam Lutz. Ms. Lutz has been with USAID for the past two decades, most recently serving as Country Representative in Sierra Leone. She has worked across the African continent with extensive experience in Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Burundi, Madagascar and in the D.R. Congo.

USAID in Mali works to help meet emergency needs and food insecurity of Malians with $66.66 million (FCFA 36.7 billion) in 2020 humanitarian assistance funding. In partnership with both Malians and others in the international community, USAID provides basic health, water, sanitation, nutrition, protection, and food assistance to communities in crisis. USAID humanitarian assistance is designed to meet urgent short-term needs while helping to build more stable communities, diversifying economic opportunities for the most vulnerable, and reducing the root causes of conflict for greater resilience.

In 2020, USAID also provided $141.6 million (FCFA 77.8 billion) from the American people for longer term development with a focus on health, agriculture, economic growth, education, peacebuilding, and democratic governance. USAID partners with a wide range of Malian stakeholders to design and carry out development activities. Engaging the widest possible range of stakeholders ensures that Malians feel a sense of ownership over the activities USAID supports and that the positive benefits are felt by all. It also ensures that support from the American people helps to build stronger, more accountable, and more democratic systems that sustainably deliver essential social services for Malians into the future.

The United States continues to be the largest bilateral donor of humanitarian and development assistance to Mali. Miriam Lutz’ background makes her an important addition to the USAID Mali team as we partner to empower Malian communities in meeting urgent needs and focusing on their longer-term development for a more peaceful and prosperous future.
