Bamako, Mali - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing $15 million (FCFA 8.25 billion) over the next five-years to improve the health and resilience of people in northern Mali.

Northern Mali faces numerous challenges due to marginalization, recurring conflict, displacement of people, and historical inequities in governance and the delivery of social services. This new program, Momentum Integrated Health Resilience, is a symbol of the United States Government’s commitment to helping all Malians lead healthier lives and benefit from peace and national reconciliation. The program will begin by working to strengthen health systems and the quality of healthcare services in the urban health districts of Gao and Timbuktu before expanding to other areas in the North.

According to U.S. Ambassador to Mali Dennis Hankins, “Diseases do not respect borders. The United States works with all Malians, wherever they live, to build a brighter and more peaceful future. We are the largest donor to Mali’s health sector sending vaccines for the fight against COVID-19, preventing and treating malaria, and working to strengthen household and community health. Healthy neighbors are good neighbors, and we are proud to expand our life-saving health assistance in northern Mali. I credit the role of the female members of the Monitoring Committee of the Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation (Comité de suivi de l’Accord, CSA) as the driving force behind our efforts to increase health programs in the North as part of the return of government services in all of Mali.”

USAIDs Momentum Integrated Health Resilience focuses on improving the health and well-being of the most vulnerable. The project is specifically designed to help address the health care needs of young women and girls, pregnant women, new mothers and their newborn babies, and children under five.

This program from the American people will improve training and supervision of northern health workers, use innovative technologies to capture data and manage health information, and build a more resilient supply chain to improve the availability of drugs and medical commodities. This will be done while strengthening coordination across a wide range of local authorities and organizations who all have important roles to play in ensuring the quality and sustainability of health care services in northern Mali.
