About Macedonia

Since 1993, USAID has nurtured a deep and enduring partnership with the people of Macedonia. Starting from the Agency’s first projects supporting local farmers and building new democratic institutions, USAID has touched nearly every aspect of Macedonia’s economy and society over the past quarter century. In concert with civil society, the private sector, and government, USAID has helped strengthen democratic processes, institutions, and civil society, enhanced competitiveness, and helped Macedonia transition from a centrally-planned economy to a market-based democracy and build an educational system that is both inclusive and responsive to the needs of a modern workforce. 
Democracy assistance focuses on improving governance and parliamentary oversight, and helps citizens increase effective oversight of their government through civic engagement and by promoting independent and legitimate media.
The economic growth program works to improve the business environment in Macedonia by assisting small and medium-sized enterprises be competitive, increasing access to investment capital, modernizing the public inspections system, streamlining procedures for investment in energy, and increasing private sector engagement in local development.
USAID works with the Ministry of Education and Science to improve inter-ethnic integration and inclusion of vulnerable groups, and to encourage civic values and volunteering among the youth in Macedonia.  
USAID is committed to supporting Macedonia’s progress towards Euro-Atlantic integration.
