US Ambassador Kosnett and Mayor Tahiri discuss how local government promotes transparency.

USAID, through its municipality-strengthening activity, is helping local governments improve procurement processes to foster greater transparency and accountability.  Most recently, USAID and the municipalities of Gjakova, Gjilan, and Vushtrri celebrated the inauguration of office equipment to support procurement reforms.  The equipment, which includes video cameras to allow greater public scrutiny of procurement processes as well as new computers and cabinets to help staff secure sensitive documents, will help these municipalities further their efforts to improve public spending.

t the inauguration ceremony in Vushtrri, U.S. Ambassador Kosnett  congratulated the municipality on its achievements to date, while encouraging the municipality to “keep up the good work, and continue to show other municipalities what they can achieve when they commit to change.”

USAID is currently providing comprehensive assistance to five target municipalities, and training procurement officers from all 38 municipalities to ultimately improve services and enhance public trust.
