The United States is making good on its commitment to ensure Kenyans are driving development.  The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is launching 13 new health programs in Kenya implemented by organizations that are Kenyan-owned, Kenyan-led, or Kenyan-managed.  More than 90 percent of USAID’s funding for HIV service delivery in Kenya, which comes from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), is now going to local partners.

“Locally led development is at the center of the U.S. Government’s strategy in Kenya.  We are excited to work with local partners and county governments on these new programs for the benefit of the Kenyan people.  A healthy society is essential to Kenya’s growth and development,” said USAID Mission Director Mark Meassick.

The initiative, known as Kenya Health Partnerships for Quality Services, will be implemented in a total of 34 counties, with an expected investment of KSh 58.5 billion over five years.  The new programs will be supporting counties in providing services for HIV prevention and treatment; family planning and reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health; nutrition; and water, sanitation, and hygiene.  Interventions to help orphans and vulnerable children will also be carried out.

USAID has been working closely with the 34 counties to ensure a smooth transition to the new programs, which will work on strengthening county health and social systems.  USAID is also building the capacity of the new local partners to ensure that they can sustainably help improve access to health and social services in Kenya.  As part of our 60-year partnership, the United States has supported Kenya in controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic, preventing maternal and child deaths, curbing malaria, tuberculosis, and COVID-19, strengthening health systems, and fighting infectious disease threats.  The U.S. government provides over KSh 60 billion in annual support to Kenya’s health sector to help improve the well-being of the Kenyan people.
