Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Power Central Asia Activity signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Mangistau Regional Electricity Network Company (MRENC), JSC to develop a study on renewable energy (RE) grid integration. MRENC is one of Kazakhstan’s largest distribution companies, providing 90 percent of the electricity consumed by the largest oil companies in the country.

In honor of World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) today held an awards ceremony to recognize journalists and bloggers for their coverage of TB. The ceremony represents the culmination of a contest to foster media coverage of TB and, in turn, bring important TB information to the public. Since January 2022, 10 items have been published and submitted for the contest.

As a child growing up in the tiny village of Baydala in northern Kazakhstan, one of Mariyash Salimgereyevna Zhakupova’s daily chores was cleaning the family’s kerosene lamp. To her small hands, it was heavy and sticky, but it had to be done, for it was the family’s only source of light once evening fell.

The USAID-funded Human Rights Focus: Women and Children activity aims to improve human rights, enabling civil society to more effectively represent citizens’ voices, and engage with the Government of Kazakhstan to help key government institutions be more effective in their mandate and responsiveness to citizens’ needs. The activity is initially focused on the empowerment of women to actively participate in government affairs, and to protect children from bullying.
