Amman (August 29, 2021) - Today, the United States, through the United States Agency for International Development, announced $4.7 million in urgent COVID-19 assistance for Jordan. This funding will provide technical assistance, equipment, and supplies to health facilities diagnosing and treating COVID-19 patients, including Al-Bashir Hospitals and Jordan’s laboratories. The funds will also train frontline health workers providing critical care to COVID-19 patients and administering vaccines.
USAID Mission Director Sherry F. Carlin highlighted that “protecting lives and Jordan’s economic stability are shared goals in the strong partnership between our two countries. These additional funds will reinforce Jordan’s health system by building the skills of health workers to care for COVID-19 patients and by strengthening the capacity of local institutions to respond to public health threats. This assistance will accelerate progress in the joint fight against COVID-19.”
This additional assistance builds on more than $36.5 million in COVID-19 assistance to Jordan since the pandemic first broke out. Through its partnership with the Government of Jordan, USAID has trained over 16,500 frontline health workers to date, provided lifesaving equipment to hospitals nationwide, and increased COVID-19 testing capacity from 500 tests per day to 50,000 per day. In partnership with the Ministry of Health, USAID launched multimedia campaigns to share accurate information on stopping the spread of the disease and to build confidence in vaccines to increase the uptake of vaccines across Jordan.
The United States government, through USAID, has provided foreign assistance from the American people to Jordan for nearly 70 years.
