BACKGROUND
Jordan is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world. A rapidly growing population and changing climate strain the already shrinking water resources. Jordan’s water systems provide comprehensive service coverage throughout the Kingdom, but water supplies are not always constant. Aging infrastructure results in significant water loss. Jordan requires expansions and upgrades to water treatment plants, water distribution systems, sewer collection systems, and wastewater treatment plants including expansion of wastewater reuse. By expanding infrastructure, the country can cope with the growing demand for diminishing surface water and groundwater resources, and to strengthen Jordan’s water security.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The project addresses current wastewater treatment process deficiencies to enhance sanitation in the Tafileh area. Under the Tafileh Wastewater Treatment Plant activity, USAID and the Government of Jordan demolished and replaced the existing wastewater treatment plant, built in 1989, and built a higher-capacity,
more efficient plant on the existing site. This new plant has increased the waste processing capacity from 1,600m3/day to 5,000 m3/day expandable to 7,500 m3/day.
