BACKGROUND

Jordan is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world.A rapidly growing population and changing climate strain the already shrinking water resources. Jordan’s water systems provide comprehensive service coverage throughout the Kingdom, but water supplies are not always constant.Aging infrastructure results in significant water loss. Jordan requires expansions and upgrades to water treatment plants, water distribution systems,sewer collection systems, and wastewater treatment plants including expansion of wastewater reuse. Infrastructure expansion will help the country cope with the growing demand for diminishing surface water and groundwater
resources, and will strengthen Jordan’s water security.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

USAID’s Jordan Water Infrastructure activity, provides studies and designs to improve the water supply to the Deir Alla and Karamah Districts. Once constructed in 2025, this water system will serve 105,000 people in 17 localities.Through this project, USAID and the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ), with funding from the European Investment Bank, will increase supply by drilling new wells,rehabilitating the existing water treatment plant, and increasing existing storage capacity.With technical support from USAID, WAJ will build eight new reservoirs, optimize the pressure in the network by creating pressure zoning, and build six new pump stations. Finally, to reduce leaks and improve performance, the project is replacing the worn-out existing pipelines and expanding the network with 450km of new pipelines, while replacing the connections for 11,000 houses to the water supply network.

The wastewater component of the project will enhance health and safety of the Deir Alla district by providing sanitation networks to serve 70,000 people in ten communities by providing designs for 120km of sewer pipelines, four pump stations, and a treatment plant.The project will be constructed through funds provided by the European Investment Bank.

NOTEWORTHY ACHIEVEMENTS

● Completed and delivered a geotechnical investigation and the 60% design report and drawings for the Deir Alla water system.

● Assessed 17 out of 20 wells in the Abu Ezzighan area, thereby identifying poor performing infrastructure and recommending rehabilitation.

● Completed a preliminary Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the water project and proceeded with the detailed environmental impact assessment for wastewater component.

● Continued preparation of the Design-Build-Operate documents for the water desalination plant and wastewater treatment plant.
