Social cohesion is a driving force for political change and a mechanism that consolidates democratic values into social institutions, thereby strengthening government, public, and private sectors while building confidence among citizenry in their country’s ability to thrive.

September 2017—Tucked away at the back of the Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf in Kingston, Jamaica, sits the quaint E3 Café, home of Deaf Can! Coffee. With a megawatt smile and warm welcome, 21-year-old Fabian Jackson eagerly greets his customers and directs them to a board with instructions on how to order coffee.

Why instructions? Because Deaf Can! Coffee is a small social enterprise that employs people from the deaf community.

“I wasn’t born deaf,” explains Jackson. “I contracted meningitis when I was about 3 or 4 and I became deaf after.”

May 2017---It’s a scorching, sunny morning, and 46-year-old Venis Bryan is raring to go with her cap shielding her from the sun, her sunglasses firmly in place and her life vest strapped to her chest. Her co-captain, Cavin Lattibeaudiere, is right by her side. Both are ready to start their 12-hour shift. With beads of sweat trickling down her face, Bryan bends down to unravel the heavy rope from the dock, then jumps into her boat and sets sail to carry out her duties: to protect what she calls her babies.

March 2017—In the isolated, serene hills of St. James on Jamaica’s west end sits the quaint little school of Retrieve Primary. The school hosts a total of approximately 120 students from grades 1 to 6. But until 2010, only 30 students attended the school.
