Today, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced more than $596 million in additional humanitarian assistance for the people of Syria. The announcement, at the fifth Brussels Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region,” co-chaired by the European Union and the United Nations, comes amid a somber milestone this month with the crisis now in its 10th year. The United States remains the single largest donor to the Syria crisis response, providing nearly $13 billion since the start of the decade-long conflict, which has left 13.4 million people in dire need of assistance and forced 13 million people from their homes.

On Tuesday, March 30, 2021, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), represented by Acting Administrator Gloria Steele, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), represented by Telecommunication Development Bureau Director Doreen Bogdan-Martin, agreed to a Letter of Intent (LOI) to strengthen collaboration on Information Communications Technology (ICT).

On Thursday, April 15, 2021, the United States will co-host with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the launch of the Investment Opportunity for the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment. The virtual convening will call on partners to join the United States and others in providing resources and commitments to accelerate global COVID-19 vaccinations and end the pandemic.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing an additional $8 million in assistance to support the rapid response to the Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Guinea, and to strengthen Ebola preparedness in seven high-risk border countries across East Africa and West Africa (République de Côte D'Ivoire, Republic of Liberia, Republic of Mali, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of Senegal, Republic of Sierra Leone, and Republic of Uganda). The additional $8 million brings USAID’s total assistance to more than $11.5 million since the outbreaks began in early February 2021.

Today, on World Tuberculosis Day, the global community acknowledges the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead in fighting tuberculosis (TB). While COVID-19 has had a devastating global impact over the past year, TB has long been the world’s leading infectious disease killer and continues to kill more people in low-and middle-income countries than any other infectious disease. Despite being preventable and curable, TB sickens 10 million people and takes 1.4 million lives, year after year.

At the Coalition for the Sahel Ministerial today, the United States announced more than $80 million in additional assistance for the Sahel region of West Africa, where 20 million people are in dire need due to a worsening humanitarian crisis.

Steele announced today at the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure that the United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will award up to $9.2 million to support the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) to help foster disaster and climate resilient infrastructure pending the availability of funds and Congressional approval.
