Prevent TB Transmission and Disease Progression

Preventing TB transmission and progression of latent TB infection (LTBI) are integral to meeting global TB targets. Early diagnosis and effective treatment are the best way to prevent TB. The U.S. Government will focus on these efforts by:

  • Screening for active TB in high-risk individuals and groups
  • Preventing transmission in group settings
  • Screening for and treatment of LTBI to reduce progression to active TB

Anika’s Story: Intensified Case Finding in Bangladesh

Anika was a 22-month-old baby girl living in the northern part of Bangladesh when she became sick. She was admitted to a local hospital where the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Challenge TB project supported the delivery of TB services. Because Anika had classic TB symptoms (fever, cough, and weight loss) and a chest x-ray suggestive of TB, she was immediately put on treatment for TB. Read the full story.
