Accelerate Research and Innovation

Research has made great strides in our understanding of tuberculosis (TB) and the translation of research funding into the development of new drugs, vaccines and diagnostics, but new tools are still not yet widely available. Further progress requires a two-pronged approach:

  • Continue support for fundamental research, the development of new tools, and approaches for detecting, treating and preventing TB
  • Help improve program impact and introduction of new tools through operational and implementation research

Each year in Kyrgyzstan, more than 5,500 people are diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB), and nearly 400 die from this infectious disease. As part of USAID’s efforts to reduce the burden of TB in Kyrgyzstan, the Agency’s Defeat TB project has been working with the Kyrgyzstan Government to make the TB care system more efficient and effective.

This effort included Defeat TB designing an entirely new financing approach, the backbone of which is a digital health information system.

The Defeat TB designed digital health information system significantly reduces the administrative burden on government officials and medical workers by automating many financial management processes. Read the full story.
