The goal of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for the 2020-2025 Georgia Country Development Cooperation Strategy (CDCS) is to strategically partner with Georgia on its Journey to Self-Reliance (J2SR) while advancing Euro-Atlantic integration and strengthening resilience to malign influence.
USAID and the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched the Strengthening Democratic Resilience in Georgia project to help independent media and civil society counter disinformation and support Georgia’s continued development toward a more responsive democracy.
USAID support for elections and political processes in Georgia starts from a simple principle - Georgia’s democratic development depends on civic participation by citizens around the country. Since 2019, USAID and the National Democratic Institute have partnered with local civil society organizations around the country, helping citizens speak up for the needs of their communities.
Georgian voters are scheduled to go to the polls this October for the 2020 Parliamentary elections. If conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, these elections will be a significant step toward consolidating the country’s democratic development. The elections are to take place under a reformed electoral system that will allow for a greater degree of choice and ultimately a more pluralistic parliament. The COVID-19 pandemic has shined a light on one of USAID’s guiding principles: for communities and societies to be resilient against threats, whether conflicts, economic crises, or a pandemic, citizens need to step up and take responsibility. USAID’s Momavlis Taoba (“Future Generation”) activity is a nationwide program that encourages secondary school students to participate in community service. During the COVID-19 pandemic, members of civics clubs have made a difference in communities across the country, including in Kvatsikhe, a village in Chiatura Municipality.
