The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $1 million in immediate humanitarian assistance to support the people affected by unprecedented flooding in Nigeria. The unusually heavy rainfall and resulting flooding has affected nearly 2.8 million people across the country. In addition, tens of thousands of homes have been damaged or completely destroyed, forcing the displacement of two million people. More than 600 people have died.

I am alarmed by the escalating risk for widespread atrocities and violence against civilians in Northern Ethiopia, as well as recent attacks by the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) and Eritrean Defense Forces (EDF) in the city of Shire. The Tigray Defense Front’s (TDF) provocative actions in the Amhara region are only deepening the acute threat to civilians.

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the deepening climate crisis, spiking prices for energy, food and fertilizer, and armed conflicts, including Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, have plunged millions into unprecedented levels of hunger and malnutrition.

USAID Provides $1.5 Million for COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout Support in Lao PDR

On a visit to Sisattanak District Hospital today, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink announced an additional $1.5 Million USD to further increase COVID-19 vaccination rollout support.  The funding is administered through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.
