On Thursday, June 9, 2022, on the margins of the Ninth Summit of the Americas, USAID Administrator Samantha Power and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas will host a multi-sectoral discussion on U.S. government efforts to expand labor migration pathways from northern Central America and announce “Guidance on Fair Recruitment Practices for Temporary Migrant Workers.” As the Biden-Harris Administration seeks to expand lawful pathways through H-2 temporary worker programs, this guidance provides principles and guidelines on preventing abuse of prospective workers.

Administrator Samantha Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC); the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), in a shared commitment to strengthen accounting practices and financial management capacity in the accountancy field to build resilient and sustainable health sector systems in countries where USAID works. USAID joins the efforts of signatories to support programming for local accountancy and finance professionals to improve financial transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption measures in the public health sector.

Today, Administrator Power met with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs for the State of Qatar. Administrator Power and Foreign Minister Al-Thani discussed collaborating to address food insecurity, climate change, and other issues of mutual interest.

On Wednesday, June 8, 2022, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Pacific Council on International Policy will convene a panel discussion on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles to highlight rising food insecurity in the Western Hemisphere and opportunities for building more sustainable, equitable, and resilient food systems throughout the region.

The theme for this Summit is “Building a Sustainable, Resilient, and Equitable Future,” and it marks the first time the United States has hosted the event since the inaugural meeting in Miami in 1994.

On a warm, muggy New York night 53 years ago, police raided the Stonewall Inn—a gay bar in Greenwich Village. Claiming that the bar had violated city liquor ordinances, the police arrested Stonewall employees and many of its patrons—most of whom identified as LGBTQI+ persons. It was not the NYPD’s first raid on gay bars in the city, nor would it be the last. But that night, LGBTQI+ Americans—led by transgender women of color—faced down police and fought back for their rights in a demonstration that lasted six days.

Today, Vice President Harris announced the first-of-its-kind White House Action Plan on Global Water Security. This plan will harness the resources of the U.S. government—from leveraging science and technology to informing our diplomacy, defense, and development efforts—to advance progress toward global water security goals. The plan will engage partner countries, civil society, and the private sector to support a more water-secure world for all. The Vice President was joined by Administrator Samantha Power, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, MCC CEO Alice Albright, and MCC Director Sonia Shahrigian.

It is with great sorrow that we learned of the passing of a member of the USAID family. Abdulhameed Al-Ajami, a former Yemeni U.S. Embassy employee who worked for USAID was detained by Houthis in November of 2021, and perished earlier this week in their custody. I'd like to extend my sincere and deepest condolences to his family and friends and recognize his tremendous service to the United States and to Yemen.

Assistant to the Administrator (AtA) of USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance Sarah Charles traveled to the Philippines and Indonesia from May 20 to 26. During the trip, AtA Charles met with USAID humanitarian partners, regional disaster management officials, and representatives of other donor governments working to develop disaster preparedness and resilience in the Indo-Pacific region and globally.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Hub announced $5 million in funding for awards and technical assistance to nine winners of the MujerProspera (WomanProsper) Challenge, a regional challenge to advance gender equality in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras through women’s economic security, employment, and entrepreneurship. The challenge advances the Biden-Harris Administration’s strategy to address the root causes of irregular migration from Central America. It was first announced by USAID Administrator Samantha Power during her trip to El Salvador in June 2021.
