Innovation and experimentation are critical in accelerating the clean energy transition. USAID cultivates new solutions, tests new ideas, and scales what works.

USAID is passionate about embracing a new model of development that taps into the expertise, resources, and innovations of a diverse array of organizations across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors that can bring groundbreaking solutions.

SURE Innovation Fund

Open innovation and competition are key to solving big problems. USAID seeks collaborators to help us identify current and emerging problems to scale up renewable energy. We invite donors and companies to co-invest with us on promising solutions, pilot projects, business models, and initiatives.

USAID’s Scaling Up Renewable Energy (SURE) Innovation Fund creates opportunities to forge new partnerships with local, U.S., and international partners, leverages private and public resources, and taps into innovative solutions that accelerate partner countries’ transition to a clean energy economy. SURE identifies alignment opportunities with the private sector and jointly explore and advance high impact private sector-led approaches. By harnessing the power of innovation and partnership, we can accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy while making electricity more affordable, reliable, accessible, and sustainable.

Technological advancements continue to drive renewable energy prices down, often making electricity from solar and wind cheaper than fossil fuels. Renewables increase investment opportunities, generate revenue for landowners, reduce emissions, and create jobs in rural and remote areas where industry and employment may be scarce. USAID’s Scaling Up Renewable Energy (SURE) program helps countries meet bold international climate commitments by accelerating their transition to more widely accessible, affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy. SURE provides renewable energy planning, procurement, and grid integration services. Our trainings, tools, and resources help policymakers, utilities, and regulators modernize energy sectors and create policies that enable renewable energy markets to flourish.
