Aswan – U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Sherry F. Carlin visited Aswan Governorate to reaffirm USAID’s strong partnership with the Egyptian people and support for Egypt’s development priorities, including higher education and voluntary family planning.

In partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, USAID inaugurated the University Center for Career Development at Aswan University, which will prepare Egypt’s youth for—and connect them to—today’s job market. This activity is a vital link between higher education and the private sector in Egypt.

“It’s an honor to celebrate the opening of Aswan University’s Center for Career Development,” said Mission Director Sherry F. Carlin at the inauguration. “The Career Center will increase the university’s capacity to serve thousands of young Egyptians who are looking to turn academic achievement into a successful career and make important contributions to Egypt’s future.”

United States Commits $6 Million in Bilateral Assistance for Egypt

The United States and Egypt, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), signed a bilateral assistance agreement amendment worth $6 million that demonstrates continued support from the American people for joint U.S.-Egypt priorities. This agreement will increase educational opportunities and strengthen the livelihoods of the people of North Sinai.

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Assistant Administrator Andrew Plitt and Middle East Affairs Director Jessica Zaman visited Luxor Governorate from Washington this week to reaffirm USAID’s strong partnership with the Egyptian people and support for Egypt’s development priorities.  In a meeting on Tuesday with Luxor Governor Mustafa Mohamed Alhem Khaled, the delegation discussed USAID’s support for Upper Egypt priorities, including water and wastewater services, voluntary family planning, agriculture, and tourism development.

The Center of Excellence for Energy at Ain Shams University opened for business, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and in close cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The establishment of this new Center is part of the long-standing commitment by the United States to support Egypt’s most important priorities, including producing high-quality applied research in energy, delivering world-class training in engineering, and driving innovation in Egypt’s energy sector, while meeting local challenges and contributing to economic growth.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Menoufia University on November 18 inaugurated a new Center for Career Development to help prepare students for the workforce and connect them with jobs. The Menoufia University Center will provide opportunities for students to explore paths to successful careers in established industries, to improve their skills, and to network with Egypt’s leading companies.

On November 18, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in cooperation with the Beni Suef Potable Water and Sanitation Company and Egypt’s Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, inaugurated a wastewater collection system in Beni Suef. The new system will provide services for more than 17,500 households in Beni Suef.

In its ongoing effort to make a positive difference in the daily lives of Egyptians, the U.S. government has worked over the past forty years to support the Government of Egypt’s efforts to ensure that all Egyptians have access to clean water. On November 26, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in cooperation with the Assiut Potable Water and Sanitation Company and Egypt’s Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, inaugurated the Massara Water Treatment Plant and the Alexandria El Tahreer Wastewater Pump Station and Collection System in Assiut Governorate.

On October 16, nine technical school teams received awards for their innovative ideas in the Fanni Mobtaker Innovation Competition sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Ministry of Education and Technical Education, and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology. The top three prizes were awarded to Toqa Mahmoud Mohamed Mahmoud from Alexandria for her innovative food production technique; to Abdel Rahman Mohamed Abdel Salam and Omar Mahmoud Ramadan from Ismailia for their multi-purpose shipping container innovation; and to Emam Ali Emam Gomaa and Ahmed Hassan Abdel Moneim from Sharquia for their plastic and metal recycling machine. From over 2,000 applicants, 45 teams reached the final stage to present their plans and prototypes in sectors including logistics and renewable energy; industrial; and agriculture and tourism education.

The United States today committed an additional $16.5 million to support joint U.S.-Egypt priorities in basic education and agribusiness.  We undertook this commitment in two amended bilateral assistance agreements, signed by Egypt and the United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), demonstrate the continued support of the American people to development in Egypt.  The agreements will provide Egyptian youth with access to quality education and help Egyptian farmers access global markets.
