2020 - 2022 | Ankawa Humanitarian Committee (AHC) | $2.5 Million

Project Snapshot

  • Implementing Partner: Ankawa Humanitarian Committee (AHC)

  • Duration: October 2020 – September 2024

  • Budget: $3.5 million

  • Location: Erbil

Overview

The violent multi-year occupation by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) of the north of Iraq forced many religious and ethnic minority groups to flee to the Iraqi Kurdistan Capital of Erbil as well as elsewhere in the country. The Chaldean Archdiocese of Erbil was one of the first to respond to these families in need.

Goals

The AHC, established by the Archdiocese in 2020, is a nongovernmental organization that provides relief programs for IDPs. USAID directly supports the AHC by strengthening its organizational management and by building their skills for supporting vulnerable populations. This has enhanced AHC’s ability to assist IDPs and to receive U.S. government and other donor resources. AHC is also supported through USAID’s Transitional Assistance to IDPs in Erbil, Iraq project which is implemented by Catholic Relief Services.

Key Results

  • Drawing on the skills developed with support from USAID, AHC coordinated the distribution of emergency cash assistance to over 200 families impacted by the flooding in Erbil in December 2021.
  •  AHC’s Board of Directors approved 22 new human resources, procurement, and finance policies to strengthen their operational departments.
  • AHC has surpassed its organizational development targets, improving overall management and specifically the management of human resources, finances, and buildings and office space.
  • As AHC launched project activities it prepared and led the registration process for project participants, registering nearly 2,300 beneficiaries. Concurrently, AHC developed a monitoring system and designed tools and feedback mechanisms to ensure that the relief efforts met beneficiary needs.
