ALMATY, Kazakhstan, December 1, 2022 - The United States is proud to join Kazakhstan, its partners, and people worldwide in observance of World AIDS Day. Today is an opportunity to honor the millions of lives lost and to stand in solidarity with those affected by or living with HIV/AIDS. 

The U.S. government's theme for World AIDS Day 2022 is "Putting Ourselves to the Test: Achieving Equity to End HIV." This theme underscores the U.S. government commitment to ending the HIV pandemic through improving access to HIV services within disproportionately affected communities. Kazakhstan's World AIDS Day theme is "Time for Equality" and emphasizes the country’s commitment to a people-centered approach by ensuring healthcare policies, systems, and services are effective, efficient, and responsive to the needs of all populations.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Kazakhstan Rule of Law Program, implemented by American Bar Association/Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), in cooperation with the Committee for Civil Society Affairs under the Ministry of Information and Social Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan (MISD), organized a roundtable in Nur-Sultan to discuss legal regulations pertaining to non-commercial organizations (NCOs) in Kazakhstan. The roundtable provided a platform to discuss the current MISD initiative to develop a new draft law addressing long-standing issues in the legislation governing the activities of NCOs in Kazakhstan.

Consequences of the drought in Kazakhstan

Earlier this month, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced $100,000 in immediate assistance to support people affected by the ongoing drought in Mangystau Oblast in Kazakhstan. USAID has provided a $100,000 grant to the Red Crescent of Kazakhstan to support the most vulnerable groups of the population affected by the drought in the Mangystau region.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) joined other international donor organizations active in Kazakhstan at a roundtable event hosted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Murat Zhurebekov, First Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aliya Shalabekova, Vice Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Odile Renaud-Basso, EBRD President, and  Peter Young, USAID Acting Regional Mission Director, were among the participants in the roundtable. The event was conducted in a mixed online and in-person format.

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, September 16, 2021 – Today, the fifth international conference on integrated tuberculosis (TB) control in Central Asia opened in Tashkent. The three-day event is organized by the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, and the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Phthisiology and Pulmonology, with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), World Health Organization, KfW development bank, and the Stop TB Partnership.

From September 10 to 12, 2021 over 400 media specialists from countries across Central Asia are coming together for the third annual Central Asian Media Festival hosted by USAID-funded Central Asia Media Program. The online media festival enables local journalists to share ideas and discuss the most pressing issues and challenges faced by media in the region.

September 9, 2021, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) celebrates the successful completion of its four-year USAID Enriching Youth for Tomorrow Program implemented by JA Worldwide, one of the oldest and largest youth-serving NGOs in the world. The activity improved the capacity of Turkmenistani youth to contribute to the local economy and their communities.

On September 3, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a new activity for youth development in Turkmenistan.  The five-year, USAID Youth Development activity, will be implemented by the QED Group and will leverage past and current USAID interventions to connect Turkmenstani youth with employment opportunities and create sustainable linkages between the youth and the labor market.

Today, the USAID-funded Social Innovation in Central Asia program, implemented by the Eurasia Foundation, launched the second Central Asia Youth Leadership Academy (CAYLA) including a cohort of 179 young leaders from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan participating in an online opening ceremony.
